The sea does not have a single scent. It is salt on the skin, wind, seaweed, wet stones and sun. Capturing all of that in a bottle is one of perfumers' hardest challenges. And yet marine perfumes are among the most loved in the world.
The molecule that brought the sea
For a long time perfumery simply had no ingredient that smelled of the sea. Flowers and spices can be distilled, but water and wind cannot. Everything changed with the discovery of calone, a synthetic molecule created in 1966 in Pfizer's laboratories. It smells like a fresh sea breeze with a hint of watermelon and became the basis of almost every marine fragrance.
In the 1990s marine perfumes exploded. The most famous of them, Giorgio Armani's Acqua di Giò from 1996, was inspired by the island of Pantelleria and became one of the best-selling men's fragrances in history.
How to wear a marine perfume
Marine fragrances are fresh, clean and easy to like. They are perfect for summer, the office and sport, but many modern versions have a warm woody base that makes them suitable all year round. If you want freshness in winter too, look for a marine scent with cedar, amber or vetiver in the base.
5 marine fragrances to try
Giorgio Armani Acqua di Giò Absolu
Acqua di Giò Absolu is the more mature version of the legend. The marine freshness of the original meets woody depth here, so the scent is not just for summer. It is no longer produced and is getting harder to find.
Bvlgari Aqva Pour Homme Marine
Aqva Marine is the freshest version of Bvlgari's Aqva line, dedicated to the sea. Blue, salty and energetic, like a jump into the sea on a hot day.
Xerjoff 40 Knots
40 Knots carries the name of a speed at sea: 40 knots is about 74 km/h, as fast as the fastest racing yachts. Sea salt, water and wind over a warm woody base, like a day on the open sea under full sail. A niche classic for sea lovers.
Mancera French Riviera
French Riviera is inspired by the French Côte d'Azur. Citrus, marine notes and sea salt capture the sun and elegance of a Mediterranean summer, with Mancera's typically strong projection.
Amouage Enclave
Enclave is a more unusual choice: it is inspired by the fjords of Musandam in Oman, where cliffs plunge straight into the sea. Fresh spearmint is the sea breeze, while frankincense and amber are the sun-baked rocks.
Try before you choose
Marine fragrances can seem similar on paper but develop very differently on skin. That is why it is best to try them for a few days. Pick three in Build your set and get 10% off the whole set, and decants are perfect for your beach bag too.
