Violette Volynka is a meeting of leather and violet and one of the most elegant scents in the Hermessence collection by Hermès. Volynka leather on top, a tender violet from Tourrettes-sur-Loup in the heart and a soft, powdery feel at the end. An Eau de Toilette from 2022, created by Christine Nagel, the in-house perfumer of Hermès.

The fragrance is refined, soft and powdery, warm and fresh at the same time. The leather here is not rough but smooth like suede, and the violet gives it light and tenderness. A unisex scent for people who love quiet luxury and perfumes with character that do not shout.

This is an original decant of the perfume in a practical travel atomizer. Perfect for testing and for wearing anywhere.

The story behind the scent

Hermessence is the Hermès collection for connoisseurs and is sold almost only in the brand's own boutiques. Each scent in it is a short perfume poem built around one or two raw materials.

Volynka is a rare reddish-brown leather with a smoky wood scent, tanned with oak and birch bark. The technique was forgotten for years and revived in 2017 by the Hermès craftsmen, inspired by leather found in the hold of a sunken ship. Christine Nagel says the leather is so strong that she pairs it with the most delicate flower, the violet, to pull it in the opposite direction.

Feel and longevity

Violette Volynka opens with leather and a fresh, green woody note, then the violet comes forward and the two find their balance. What remains is a clean, powdery violet on soft leather. Longevity is good for an Eau de Toilette and the projection is moderate and stays close to the skin, so 3 to 4 sprays are right. Best worn in autumn and spring, day and evening.
